This is one of my favorite breathing techniques to get focused.
For most practitioners it takes a little bit of practice but it’s well worth it.

Video Transcript:
Ok you guys, this is Dennis again with the Yoga Mandiram, shooting you out another video on breathing. I love making these videos. They’re so much fun.

This particular type of breathing is called “The Full Exhale”. The concept behind this kind of breath, is that it will get you focused and energized. It will get you moving. It will help you get into what you need to get into. I’m a surfer and when the waves are a little bit big and I may be a little bit nervous, this is the breathing that I do to get focused. If you need to go for that job interview and you need to have a sharp mind and to be grounded, this is the breath I would be doing as well. So that’s what this breathing technique is all about.

If you’re a Yogini or a Yogi and are studying the philosophy of the of the energy body, this particular type of breathing will activate and energize the lower three chakras, Muladhara, Swadhisthana and Manipura. And since we work so directly, so fully with the diaphragm in this particular type of breathing, it’s an excellent bridge to the Anahata or the heart Chakra. It is excellent for digestion and activating the lower belly. There are several other ones. This is just one, but it is very powerful.

Another aspect of this particular breathing technique, is that it will cultivate heat within the body. What is so nice about this particular type of breathing is that it will not overheat the body. So there are a lot of breathing techniques out there to build heat within the body. But unless you know how to regulate the heat within the body, they can be challenging to work with. This breath doesn’t. You can build heat within the body and easily regulate the heat within the body and it’s done through the exhale. We have a very long exhale through the mouth.

Ok, this is the technique. Whether you’re sitting down or standing up, lift the chest and broaden in the shoulders and open the armpits, so that you are light in the chest. Even though you’re broadening the chest, you’re not holding it there rigidly. You need to be loose and open especially in the armpits. This is a great metaphor. So we are going to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth.

Now, this is what’s key, this is the technique. We are going to control the inhale and we are going to control the exhale. And that exhale is going to be longer than the inhale. That’s important. The length is entirely up to you. So your breathing and your lengthening out the breath but you’re doing it in a comfortable fashion. You want to have a enough breath left in the inhale or the exhale so that you can, with control, move into the other breath cycle. Now for those of you that do not know Ujjayi breathing, that’s ok. You can still do this. The Ujjayi breathing is the first type of breathing that we do. We use the Ujjyai with the inhale. But once again, if you do not know the Ujjyai that’s fine.

Remember that when we go into the exhale and your exhaling all of your air out, try not to crunch over like this… no “Hulk”. Keep your chest open and loose, light and beaming. Alright, so here we go. Let’s do this together. Are you ready? We’re going to start with an inhale. Ujjyai if you know Ujjyai.

Ready, begin. Inhale….
Exhale, control the exhale…
Inhale…
Exhale…
Inhale…
Exhale…
This is the last one so inhale through the mouth…
Exhale through the mouth… now come to neutral breathing where your breath is moving through its cycle organically. There you go. You did it!

So remember, this is a focusing breath. It’s called The Full Exhale. You controlled the inhale and the exhale and the exhale is longer than the inhale.
